Access Method 13

Crane-Suspended
Workboxes

A purpose-designed personnel workbox may be considered for an isolated concrete repair location that conventional access cannot practically serve. The crane, workbox, working position and repair task require a coordinated specialist plan.

Method Overview

A Specialist Option For
Isolated Repair Areas

Crane-suspended personnel workboxes differ from material cages and from EWP baskets. They are designed for people and their permitted equipment and must be used with a suitable crane and operating arrangement.

For concrete repairs, reaching the defect is only part of the assessment. The workbox must offer a practical position for the proposed task, with controlled tools, debris and materials. A large or prolonged repair may be better served by a different access system.

Situations Where Workboxes
May Be Considered

These are potential applications for assessment, not a recommendation to use a workbox wherever a crane can reach.

01

Isolated High-Level Defects

A limited workface at height where installing a conventional access system is difficult or impractical.

02

Obstructed Structural Faces

A repair position separated from suitable EWP setup areas by building geometry or other obstructions.

03

Close-Up Assessment

Targeted examination of a difficult structural element where the planned workbox position can support the assessment.

04

Limited Repair Tasks

Defined operations whose tool forces, materials, duration and working position are compatible with the assessed system.

05

Infrastructure Workfaces

Selected external or elevated structural areas with suitable crane setup and a controlled lifting zone.

06

Coordinated Specialist Works

Access planned with the crane contractor and repair team around the specific operation and recovery arrangements.

Where It Is Commonly Used

Typical Concrete Repair
Applications

A workbox is a specialist option for an assessed scope. It is not a default substitute for scaffolding, rope access or an EWP.

Targeted verification of difficult repair areas
Defined tasks within a coordinated crane operation
Planning The Access

What We Consider Before
Using This Method

Access Alternatives

Compare conventional platforms and scaffold first, and establish why a crane workbox suits the specific location and task.

Crane & Personnel Workbox

The crane, personnel-rated workbox, load limits and operating arrangement must be assessed together by the appropriate specialists.

Position & Repair Forces

Consider the stability of the working position, tool reaction, reach and handling of debris and repair materials.

Communication & Recovery

Coordinate the lifting zone, personnel, communication, weather limits and emergency recovery before the operation.

Important: Access systems are selected and set up for the actual site conditions. Required licences, competencies, engineering, exclusion zones, fall protection, rescue planning and other controls are determined by the work being undertaken and the applicable site/WHS requirements.

Where It Works Well

Advantages

May reach isolated areas that conventional access cannot serve

Provides a defined personnel working enclosure

Can support an agreed limited work scope

Offers another option during specialist access planning

What Can Limit It

Limitations

Requires suitable crane setup and operating space

Personnel lifting involves specific equipment and operating requirements

Working position and tool forces can restrict the repair tasks

Often inefficient for long-duration or extensive repairs

From Inspection To Access Setup

How We Plan A
Difficult-Access Repair

01

Inspect The Repair Area

Confirm the defect location, extent, structure type and the access obstacles surrounding it.

02

Compare Practical Access Options

Consider reach, platform size, setup, duration, site disruption and the repair equipment required.

03

Plan The Work Method

Coordinate access setup, exclusion zones, material handling, protection and repair sequencing.

04

Complete Works In Stages

Carry out the repair with access repositioned or staged as required across the structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About This
Access Method

?Is a crane workbox the same as an EWP basket?⌄

No. A personnel workbox is lifted by a crane as part of a planned lifting operation. An EWP is a separate access machine with its own operating system and requirements.

?Can any crane cage be used to lift workers?⌄

No. Material cages are not personnel workboxes. The equipment must be designed for personnel lifting and used within the applicable requirements and planned operation.

?Can concrete breakout be done from a workbox?⌄

It is not automatically suitable. Tool reaction, the working position, falling debris, equipment loads and the full repair sequence must be assessed before any such task is included.

?When would another access method be preferable?⌄

A broad or lengthy repair, unsuitable crane setup or an unstable work position may make scaffold, a suspended platform, rope access or an EWP more practical.
