THE PROBLEM
Advanced concrete cancer had developed along the reinforced-concrete vehicle-entry beam at Westfield Parramatta, with extensive spalling, exposed reinforcement and significant corrosion affecting the beam face and soffit edge. Loss of concrete cover had left reinforcement directly exposed to the environment.
THE REPAIR
Loose and delaminated concrete was broken out to sound substrate and the affected reinforcement fully exposed. Corroded steel was mechanically cleaned and treated, with reinforcement repaired or replaced where required. The beam was rebuilt to its original profile using structural repair mortar and finished to match the surrounding concrete.
THE OUTCOME
The entrance beam was fully reinstated, exposed reinforcement encapsulated and the original structural profile restored. Loose and spalling concrete was eliminated and a clean, durable finish achieved.
