Concrete Cancer Repairs – Shopping Centre Access Ramp Remediation
Location: Westfield Shopping Centre, Sydney, NSW
Project Type: Commercial Access Ramp Concrete Remediation
Scope: Access Ramp Walls, Reinforcement Scanning, Concrete Spalling And Protective Repairs
Completed: 17/11/2025
Problem:
Concrete cracking, extensive rust staining and localised spalling had developed along the reinforced concrete walls of a busy shopping-centre access ramp. Ongoing moisture exposure and water penetration had contributed to reinforcement corrosion, causing sections of the concrete cover to delaminate, fracture and separate from the underlying reinforcing steel.
Scope Of Work:
The affected ramp walls were inspected and scanned using specialist concrete-scanning equipment to locate the reinforcement and assess the extent of deterioration before repairs commenced. Loose and delaminated concrete was removed from the nominated areas, corroded reinforcement was mechanically cleaned and treated, and the damaged concrete profiles were reinstated using compatible structural repair mortars. Associated crack repairs, joint repairs and protective coating applications were also completed where required to reduce future moisture ingress and extend the service life of the repaired concrete.
Outcome:
The deteriorated concrete was successfully removed, affected reinforcement was treated and the damaged access-ramp walls were structurally reinstated, restoring both the integrity and appearance of the affected concrete. All works were carefully staged around shopping-centre operations to maintain safe pedestrian access, minimise disruption to customers, retailers and centre management, and return the repaired areas to service with improved long-term durability.
