Mast Climbing
Work Platforms

Mast climbers provide a working deck that can be raised or lowered along an elevation. They can suit repeated concrete repairs where the project benefits from platform space and adjustable working height.

Method Overview

Move The Working Deck
Along The Elevation

A mast climbing work platform travels along one or more supporting masts. Unlike a swing stage suspended from above, its support arrangement is based on the selected mast system, foundations and any required ties to the building.

For concrete repairs, the value is in keeping workers, tools and repair materials together at a useful working height. The system must be checked against the actual breakout, reinforcement treatment, formwork and reinstatement sequence rather than selected on reach alone.

Systems Within This Category

Common Mast Climber
Configurations

Platform dimensions, loading and extensions must follow the selected equipment configuration and the site-specific design.

01

Single-Mast Platforms

Platforms supported on one mast for a repair zone that fits within the system configuration and working capacity.

02

Twin-Mast Platforms

Working decks supported by two masts, considered for broader facade repair runs.

03

Configured Deck Extensions

Approved extensions can help align the working edge with parts of an irregular elevation, within the equipment limits.

04

Staged Elevation Setups

The system is established across successive areas as repair works progress around a building.

05

Material-Handling Layouts

Working space arranged around the allowed distribution of tools, mortar, reinforcement and collected debris.

06

Coordinated Access Systems

Mast climbers may be used alongside scaffold or another access method where corners and setbacks prevent one deck from reaching every defect.

Where It Is Commonly Used

Typical Concrete Repair
Applications

Mast climbers can be considered where the work repeats along an elevation and the structure and surrounding area can accommodate the system.

Multi-level facade concrete cancer repairs
Repeated slab-edge repairs
External wall and column remediation
Staged commercial building repairs
Large areas requiring several repair operations
Reinstatement and protective finishing after concrete repairs
Planning The Access

What We Consider Before
Using This Method

Base & Structural Support

The base location, supporting slab or ground and proposed building ties must suit the mast system and imposed loads.

Reach & Building Shape

Balconies, returns, awnings and setbacks can prevent a platform edge from approaching parts of the repair face.

Loading & Work Sequence

Allow for the combined and distributed loads from people, tools, stored products, formwork and waste.

Operations & Recovery

Coordinate public access, deliveries, wind limits, power supply and the planned response to a stopped platform.

Important: Access systems are selected and set up for the actual site conditions. Required licences, competencies, engineering, exclusion zones, fall protection, rescue planning and other controls are determined by the work being undertaken and the applicable site/WHS requirements.

Where It Works Well

Advantages

Working height can be adjusted to suit the repair stage

Deck space supports a shared repair operation

Can reduce repeated relocation of smaller platforms

Useful for broad, repeated facade work

What Can Limit It

Limitations

Installation and structural support require planning

Projections and complex facades can restrict reach

Not usually proportionate for a single minor defect

Capacity and permitted configurations depend on the selected system

From Inspection To Access Setup

How We Plan A
Difficult-Access Repair

01

Inspect The Repair Area

Confirm the defect location, extent, structure type and the access obstacles surrounding it.

02

Compare Practical Access Options

Consider reach, platform size, setup, duration, site disruption and the repair equipment required.

03

Plan The Work Method

Coordinate access setup, exclusion zones, material handling, protection and repair sequencing.

04

Complete Works In Stages

Carry out the repair with access repositioned or staged as required across the structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About This
Access Method

?Is a mast climber the same as a vertical mast lift?⌄

No. A mast climbing work platform is an installed mast-supported access system. A compact vertical mast lift is a type of EWP with a different operating arrangement.

?When is a mast climber useful for concrete repairs?⌄

It may suit repeated repairs along a substantial elevation where platform space, working-height adjustment and the repair duration justify installation.

?Can a mast climber reach every balcony edge?⌄

No. Balcony projections, corners and setbacks must be checked against the available platform configuration. Some areas may need a different access method.

?Is a mast climber always cheaper than scaffolding?⌄

No. Compare installation, hire, support requirements, repair duration, productivity and the amount of repositioning needed for the particular building.
