Multi-Span Bridge Concrete Rehabilitation

Piers, beams, soffits & deck edges — Homebush, NSW.

Bridge & Infrastructure Concrete Cancer Repairs

Project Overview

This Homebush multi-span rehabilitation package covered a series of targeted concrete repairs across piers, beams, soffits and deck edges. Rather than isolating the full structure, the works were divided into span-by-span repair fronts. Each area was inspected, opened up, repaired and signed off before access systems and exclusion zones moved forward. This kept the programme focused on the highest-priority defects while maintaining bridge use around the works.
LOCATIONHomebush, NSW
DELIVERYMulti-stage infrastructure repair package
REPAIR SCOPEPiers, beams, soffits & deck edges
ACCESSMultiple repair fronts, traffic interfaces, overhead work and changing access positions required detailed staging so crews could progress without occupying the full bridge at once.

THE PROBLEM

Widespread localised deterioration affected several spans, including concrete spalling, delamination and corroded reinforcement at piers, beam faces, soffits and deck edges.

THE REPAIR

The repair package combined staged defect mapping, controlled breakout, reinforcement treatment and replacement, structural mortar reinstatement and local protective coatings across multiple work fronts.

THE OUTCOME

Priority deterioration across the nominated spans was repaired and documented, with each work front completed and released before access moved to the next section.

SITE CONDITIONS

Multiple repair fronts, traffic interfaces, overhead work and changing access positions required detailed staging so crews could progress without occupying the full bridge at once.

Project Scope

The repair package was divided into practical work fronts so each defect type could be treated with the appropriate method and access controls.

Multi-Span Defect Mapping

Coordinate defect records across several spans so repair quantities and access requirements can be staged logically.

Pier & Beam Repairs

Treat local concrete cancer and reinforcement corrosion across accessible pier and beam repair zones.

Soffit & Deck-Edge Works

Repair overhead soffits and deck-edge deterioration with dedicated protection below each active work front.

Progressive Sign-Off

Complete inspection records and release each repaired section before the next access stage begins.

Multi-Span Rehabilitation Process

Each span was treated as a controlled work front, allowing access, repair and inspection activities to progress in a repeatable sequence.

01

Programme Defect Survey

Confirm priority defects and group repairs by span, element and access method.

02

Stage Access Systems

Set up the required scaffold, elevated platform or underside access for the active repair front.

03

Breakout & Exposure

Remove unsound concrete, expose affected reinforcement and verify the actual repair extent.

04

Steel Treatment & Replacement

Clean and treat reinforcement and complete local steel replacement where included in the repair design.

05

Structural Reinstatement

Rebuild damaged sections using the specified repair mortar and complete local protective finishing.

06

Inspection & Move-On

Record the completed section, remove controls and relocate access to the next programmed work front.
