Historic Building Façade Concrete Repairs

Cornices, façade bands, parapets & external walls — Sydney CBD, NSW.

Heritage Concrete Cancer Repairs

Project Overview

This Sydney CBD heritage façade project focused on deteriorated concrete around architectural projections rather than broad façade replacement. Repair boundaries were kept tight to preserve sound original fabric. Corroded reinforcement was exposed only where required, treated, and re-encapsulated before damaged profiles were rebuilt by hand to match the surrounding geometry. The programme was staged from scaffold so pedestrian routes and building access could remain controlled below.

ACCESSCBD pedestrian traffic, retained heritage detailing and restricted façade access required small repair zones, debris containment and close coordination with the building manager.

THE PROBLEM

Ageing façade concrete showed cracking, delamination, local spalling and reinforcement corrosion around projecting cornices, bands and parapet details.

THE REPAIR

Deteriorated material was removed in controlled sections, reinforcement was cleaned and treated, and missing profiles were rebuilt with hand-applied repair mortars shaped to the surrounding architectural detail.

THE OUTCOME

The nominated façade elements were structurally reinstated while retaining the scale, lines and visual character of the surrounding heritage fabric.

SITE CONDITIONS

CBD pedestrian traffic, retained heritage detailing and restricted façade access required small repair zones, debris containment and close coordination with the building manager.

Project Scope

The repair package was divided into practical work fronts so each defect type could be treated with the appropriate method and access controls.

Heritage Façade Mapping

Identify concrete deterioration while distinguishing repairable areas from sound original architectural fabric.

Controlled Hand Breakout

Remove loose and delaminated material in small sections to limit unnecessary loss of surrounding detail.

Reinforcement Treatment

Clean and treat exposed reinforcement before rebuilding concrete cover to the specified detail.

Profile Reinstatement

Re-form cornice lines, bands and local façade geometry using hand-applied repair materials and controlled finishing.

Heritage Façade Repair Process

The programme prioritised structural repair while keeping intervention to the minimum area necessary around retained heritage features.

01

Condition Survey

Map visible cracks, delamination, spalls and rust staining across the nominated façade elements.

02

Repair Boundary Set-Out

Define tight repair limits around sound material and protect adjoining architectural details.

03

Controlled Breakout

Remove deteriorated material carefully and expose reinforcement only where required by the assessed repair.

04

Steel Treatment

Clean, assess and treat exposed reinforcement, including local replacement where the approved repair detail requires it.

05

Profile Rebuilding

Reinstate concrete cover and rebuild moulded or projecting profiles to match the surrounding geometry.

06

Curing & Final Review

Cure the repair materials, complete local finishing and inspect each façade zone before scaffold progression.
