PROJECT 45 Gladesville, NSW

Bridge Pier & Headstock Remediation

Bridge piers, headstocks & beam-seat zones — Gladesville, NSW.

Bridge & Infrastructure Concrete Cancer Repairs

Project Overview

This Gladesville bridge repair package focused on localised deterioration to reinforced-concrete piers and headstocks rather than a full bridge rehabilitation. Repairs were divided into manageable work zones so access equipment, traffic controls and overhead protection could be moved progressively. After breakout, exposed reinforcement was assessed and treated before the concrete profiles were rebuilt and nominated areas received protective finishing.

DELIVERYStaged access around an operational bridge
REPAIR SCOPEBridge piers, headstocks & beam-seat zones
ACCESSTraffic, overhead work, restricted access around pier locations and public areas below required engineered access, exclusion zones and carefully programmed work windows.

THE PROBLEM

Spalling, rust staining and reinforcement corrosion affected pier faces, headstock edges and local beam-seat zones on an operational bridge structure.

THE REPAIR

Defects were mapped before controlled breakout, reinforcement cleaning and local steel replacement, structural repair-mortar reinstatement and application of protective systems to nominated areas.

THE OUTCOME

The nominated pier and headstock repair zones were reinstated in stages, with concrete cover restored and bridge operations maintained throughout the programme.

SITE CONDITIONS

Traffic, overhead work, restricted access around pier locations and public areas below required engineered access, exclusion zones and carefully programmed work windows.

Project Scope

The repair package was divided into practical work fronts so each defect type could be treated with the appropriate method and access controls.

Pier Repairs

Repair spalled and delaminated pier faces where corrosion had reduced the surrounding concrete cover.

Headstock Edges

Reinstate damaged headstock edges and soffit zones around exposed reinforcement.

Beam-Seat Zones

Treat local deterioration around accessible beam-seat and support interfaces within the repair package.

Protective Systems

Apply the specified protective treatment to nominated repaired areas after curing and inspection.

Bridge Pier & Headstock Repair Process

The works were broken into controlled sections so structural repairs and bridge operations could continue in parallel.

01

Defect Mapping

Survey piers and headstocks, mark repair boundaries and confirm access requirements for each work zone.

02

Access & Protection

Install the required scaffold, platform or elevated access and establish exclusion or traffic controls.

03

Controlled Breakout

Remove deteriorated concrete to sound material and expose reinforcement around the affected zones.

04

Reinforcement Repair

Clean, assess and treat exposed steel, completing local bar replacement where included in the approved scope.

05

Concrete Reinstatement

Rebuild pier and headstock profiles with the specified structural repair system and finish to line.

06

Protection & Close-Out

Complete curing, protective coatings where specified, final inspections and progressive removal of access controls.
